Getting Started -> Setting up your first route

What is a route?

Routes are the cornerstone of any VOIP provider, a route detemines where your calls are "terminated" e.g. where the call gets off the internet and onto the PSTN (the standard telephone networks). Of course with vspPanel you can also setup internal routes, and routes which only accept certain calls etc, however to keep it simple we'll only be covering call termination through a provider here using FaktorTel as an example.

I've setup a provider, why do I need to setup a route?

When you setup a provider you created a connection to that provider from your server, however at the moment without a route your users calls won't know to go through that provider. By using a route we can tell certain calls to go out certain providers. For simplicities sake however we will only use 1 provider which means we want all of our calls to go through this one provider for all users. For more information on advanced routes please see the full vspPanel manual.

Lets setup our first route then.

Whoops, it's already done for us!

To view your route click on "Modify Routes". You will notice that as you have added a provider you now automatically have a route added with the name of that provider. This is a "straight through" route which means that any calls you send out of this route will go through that provider and that provider only.

In this menu you also have the option of adding "custom routes" these are routes that aren't specifically attached to a provider and can be added to take advantage of multiple providers. To setup a custom route please see the vspPanel documentation.
